End of Viking Opening Weekend at PNW Invitational

NEWBERG, Ore. – The Portland State men’s tennis team opened its fall season at the PNW Invitational this weekend. The Vikings were one of five teams to compete in the three-day event that began on Friday October 1st and concluded on Sunday October 3rd.

Despite losing in their opener, the Portland State team Nils Plutat highlighted the Vikings in flight A in singles. Plutat defeated Ryan Miyagawa of the Pacific 6-4, 7-6 (3) en route to the consolation final before losing in his last weekend singles match 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 against Mason Tran of the Pacific.

Second year Olivier Richard led the Vikings in Vol B in singles. After securing two victories to open the tournament, he met his compatriot Viking Olivier Fernandez in the semi-finals on Saturday. Richards took the victory 6-4, 6-2 over his teammate before eventually falling in the championship flight B, 6-4, 6-0.

Plutat and partner of doubles Tommy hsu won the weekend’s only doubles victory for the Vikings in the A-doubles doubles. The pair beat Murata / Hu of the Pacific on their way to the quarterfinals. The duo closed the double with a 6-2 loss to Idaho’s Bascon / Duron.

The Vikings will return to action at the University of Oregon Invitational October 12-14 in Eugene.
