Hoffman Hat Trick Sparks Viking Victory At Conference Opening

HILLSBORO, Oregon – The Portland State Women’s Football team opened the Big Sky Sunday afternoon with a 4-2 victory over Sacramento State at Hillsboro Stadium.

The victory marks the Viking’s first victory in Big Sky since October 6, 2019, as head coach Katie Burton and his team improved to 3-5-0 in aggregate and 1-0-0 in conference action. Sacramento State fell to 1-6-2 that year.

Viking first year Abi Hoffmann had a monster day, starting with his career debut 4th minute goal set up by another freshman Lucy quinn.

After the teams exchanged several shots in the opening minutes, Sacramento State was able to find the equalizer in the 22nd minute. The score remained at one as the teams headed for the break.

Barely two minutes into the second half, Hoffman scored his second goal of the day. A Sienna Higinbotham attempt ricocheted off Hornet goalie Katie Price landing at Hoffman’s foot to secure the 2-1 lead.

The Hornets were quick to react once again, ending the two-man game with their own 48th-minute goal.

Hoffman found his most impressive goal of the competition a few minutes later in the 50th minute. Shooting 22 yards, Hoffman scored the go-ahead goal in the upper left corner just past Price’s fingertips.

Portland State’s last goal of the day came in the 75th minute when Sofi papastamos perfectly served a corner at the head of Higinbotham who sent him to the back of the net, securing a two-goal advantage.

The Vikings’ defense tied for the last 15 minutes, holding the Hornets scoreless as they won 4-2.

Hoffman, who entered the scoreless game of his career at Portland State, walked away with the program’s first hat trick since 2017.

The Vikings beat Sacramento State 18-14 while scoring five corners in the game. Sidney o’billovich clinched victory in goals for PSU, making five saves in his third start of the season.

The state of Portland will look to build on its momentum next week as they head to northern Colorado on Friday, October 1 (6:00 p.m. PT).
