CHICAGO, Illinois – The North Park women’s basketball team are undefeated after one game, as they beat the St. Catherine’s University Wildcats by a score of 68-56 Friday night at the NPU Gymnasium. Interim Head Coach Annie shain won his first victory at the helm as the Viking defense forced 22 turnovers.

It was North Park’s two reigning All-CCIW caps that kicked off the game for the Vikings as Jayla johnson opened the game with a lay-up, followed shortly after by a three-point shot from Emily czuhajewski. NPU led quickly 5-0 and did not give up the lead the entire game. With key forwards Johnson and Josie summerville get in trouble halfway through the first one, Esther miller was necessary to wreak havoc on the painting. Miller did just that, chasing a huge run for the remainder of the half, entering the break with 12 points and eight boards. Johnson accompanied her in double digits with 11, while Czuhajewski had eight at the break.

Half-time: North Park 43, Sainte-Catherine 30

Sainte-Catherine continued to keep pace with the hosts, appearing to have a counter for every big hit the Vikings might have had in the third. The NPU defense heated up in the fourth quarter, stopping the Wildcats just nine points in the frame.

It was a three-point Czuhajewski that blew up the crowd in the gym, putting North Park in 12 points with just 3:36 to go. A Miller’s one-and-a-half later extended the NPU lead to 15 and essentially put the nail in the coffin for St. Catherine. The Vikings were again led in the second half by Miller and Johnson who each had six points, while Chantel Hairdresser cut in five.
