Philip Nelson named women’s golf coach Racer

Murray State Athletics has announced the hiring of Philip Nelson as the Racers’ women’s golf head coach.

Nelson comes to MSU from Colorado Christian to become the second head coach in Murray State women’s golf history following the retirement of coach Velvet Milkman.

Nelson comes to Murray after five seasons as women’s head coach at Colorado Christian University, where he also participated in the men’s golf program.

“Throughout his coaching career, Philip’s teams have demonstrated success in all areas that directly align with our department’s core values ​​and mission,” said Scott Barhart, the runners’ golf/sport administrator. “His teams have been academically and athletically strong. Along with his passion and knowledge for golf, we believe that one of Philip’s strongest attributes is his ability to create a strong team culture. In the spring of 2022, Nelson was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after his team won the conference championship, finished second in the NCAA D-II Regional after appearing in the event as a 11e seeded then in the NCAA Finals, the Cougars posted a 12e arrival point.

Demonstrating exceptional leadership and golf instruction, Nelson established a championship-level program at Colorado Christian that included four All-America selections, five NCAA All-Region selections, 18 All-Phillip NelsonConference selections, two Player of the Year conference winners and the nation’s No. 1 ranked all-female freshman class of 2019.

In the classroom, teams from Nelson to Colorado Christian have produced a top 10 national ranking in academic achievement in 2020 and 2021, and 11 WGCA Academic All Americans in the past 2 years.

Nelson is a recognized teacher of the game having developed the student-athletes in his care and acting as a certified instructor for Craig Koy Golf where he has worked with some of the top amateurs and professionals in the country.

As a Colorado Christian player, Nelson won multiple awards while serving as team captain for three seasons and helping his team reach the NCAA Tournament for four consecutive seasons.

As the primary fundraiser for CCU Athletics, Nelson paved the way for the school to achieve its highest fundraising total in program history in 2021-22 and he also paved the way to save the women’s elimination golf program. Over the past two years, fundraising for athletics has tripled at CCU under Nelson’s leadership. He also raised funds and opened the Harriet Women’s Golf Indoor Practice Center in 2020.

“For the past 15 years, my wife and I have built a house in Denver and Colorado Christian University, and we’ve always said it would take something special to pull us away. 2022 Hall of Fame Dinner and Program

The annual Hall of Fame dinner will take place on the evening of November 11 at the CFSB Center. The Class of 2022 will also be recognized on Nov. 12 in the Racer football game against Robert Morris (1 p.m. kickoff) and a men’s basketball game against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Race Football Mini Ticket Plan

Three-game Race Football mini-packages are now available for purchase. The package includes a general admission ticket to the home opener against Jacksonville State (September 10), Eastern Illinois (September 24) and Robert Morris (November 12). The home opening will be an evening to remember as we “Light Up the Stew” and give away 3,000 blue and gold LED glow sticks presented by CFSB. The Racers return home two weeks later for the ever-popular “Family Weekend”, and end the season at home with Hall of Fame and Military Day. Each purchase of a 3-game mini-plan will also include a general admission ticket to a Racers home basketball game at CFSB Center during the 2022-23 season.
