Viking Hoops Men Tame Wildcats

SIOUX FALLS, SD – With 20 assists out of 29 baskets made, the Augustana men’s basketball team faced the Wayne State Wildcats 71-55 on Sunday afternoon inside the Sanford Pentagon. The victory improves the Vikings’ record to 11-2 on the year and 5-2 in NSIC action. Wayne State, the preseason favorite in the NSIC South Division, drops to 4-3 in the loop and 7-6 overall.

Augustana led from start to finish with four double-digit players and a near-triple-double from Tyler riemersma. The senior recorded 10 rebounds, eight assists and six points. The four in double-digit scoring was Dylan Lebrun with a top of 18 points, while Adam dykman, Jameson bryan and Isaac fink each totaled 12 points.

Fink opened the game with a 3-point basket, thanks in large part to an assist from LeBrun, as the Vikings went on to score the game’s first seven points.

The Wildcats managed to come close to just one point at 13-12 on a Jordan Janssen jumper with 12:19 left in the first half. However, Augustana rebuilt her lead to seven points on a free throw from Bryan to 25-18.

The Vikings then entered at halftime with a 35-26 lead. In the first half, AU collected assists on 12 of the 14 baskets made.

Augustana’s lead quickly grew to 15 points to just 1:40 in the second half and extended to 17 on a quick layup from Riemersma to give the home side a 45-28 lead with 15: 28 to play in the game. The game was never in doubt for the remainder of the competition, as the Wildcats were only able to get 15 points, the last occurrence being with 7:16 remaining on the clock.

The lead eventually climbed to 25 points on a Bennett Otto layup with 2:32 on the clock for a score of 71-46. As the two benches emptied, the final score stood at 71-55.

Augustana shot 53.7% from the field for the game and was even more impressive 8 of 13 for 61.5% at 3 points. LeBrun and Fink combined to pass 5 of 5 deep.

Augustana is staying at her home on Heritage Court inside the Sanford Pentagon on Friday welcoming MSU Moorhead at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Vikings face Northern State at 3:30 p.m. ET.
