Viking Soccer claim victory in conference opener


ST. PAUL, Minn.–Augustana soccer defeated the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears in Game 1 of the NSIC, 1-0. The Vikings earned their first win of the season and handed CSP their third shutout loss. Augustana improves to 1-2-1 and Concordia-St. Paul drops to 0-3-1 on the season.

The Vikings had five shots on goal and 12 shots overall while Concordia-St. Paul also sent five shots on goal with 10 shots in total.

Game time

LUCK (AU) 17′- Grace Douglas had the first scoring opportunity for the Vikings in the first half, netting Augustana’s first shot of the game.

GOAL (AU) 21′- Morgan Keirstead sent a flare past the CSP keeper from 18 yards after a smooth pass from Kelly Kleekamp split the defense of the Golden Bear. The assist is the second of the season for Kleekamp.

CHANCE (CSP) 46′ – Concordia-St. Paul had the first scoring chance of the second half from a corner kick, but after the ball bounced past goal, the Golden Bears were unable to shoot solidly and the score remained 1-0.

CHANCE (CSP) 52′ – The Golden Bears saw another chance in the second half when the striker fired a shot from the top right corner of the penalty area and the ball went into the net, but the goal was called off by the referee after a CSP player was flagged offside.

LUCK (CSP) 64′- A Concordia-St.Paul striker had a chance to score in the box after receiving the ball from a CSP midfielder. Ellender Shea was between the net and the golden bear and managed to deflect the ball.

CHANCE (CSP) 66 ‘- A free kick just outside the box gave the Golden Bears the advantage but Ellie Schock defended the goal and cleared the ball out of the defensive zone to keep the Vikings in the lead.

One more thing

Jillian Barkus stopped five shots on target to help the Vikings to victory. The Vikings goaltender was solid in net, earning a shutout victory.

next game

Augustana travels to Mankato, Minn., on Sunday for a contest with Minnesota State’s No. 11. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
